SINGULAR FORMS OF OTHER: ANOTHER vs. THE OTHER

A. Introduction

Another has the meaning of one more than a group of similar items, one in addition to something that has already been mentioned. Another is a combination of article an + other, written in one word, if translated into Indonesian it means "the other". Another as adjective is always followed by single nouns (singular noun), never by plural nouns (plural noun). Frequent errors are many who still use the word another_people. This cannot happen because people are plural nouns. Besides that another is also used as a pronoun (pronoun) whose presence stands alone (without any accompanying nouns). Another as pronoun is used to avoid repeating nouns that are not needed in sentences. Meanwhile the other also has the same meaning as another, which means "the other", but in its use it is different from another. The other is something else, the last one in a particular group, the only one remaining from a certain number of similar or similar items. The other can be followed by singular nouns or plural nouns, but in this unit we will only focus on singular or single use. The other as pronoun also stands alone like another. The other refers to the one remaining item / person. The other is specific, meaning it is clear what we mean. If there are two objects or people, then the other means "the other", but if more than two, "the other" means the last or remaining. Based on the explanation described above, it can be concluded that another and the other can be used as adjectives in front of nouns or in front of the word one. Another and the other can also be used alone (stand alone) as a pronoun.

B. Examples of another uses and the other

1. There is a large bowl of apples on the table. Paul is going to eat one apple. If he is

 still hungry after that, he can eat another apple. There are many apples to choose
 from.

2. There two apples on the table. Paul is going to eat one of them. Sara is going to eat the other apple.

3. This hat is too big for me. Can I have another?
(Topi ini terlalu besar untuk saya. Dapatkah saya menggunakan yang lain?)

4. One participant went on to the next challenge. Another participant failed.
(Satu peserta lanjut ke tantangan berikutnya. Peserta yang lain gagal.)

5. I want to buy two cars. One is a sport car, and the other is a SUV.
(Saya ingin membeli dua mobil. Satu mobil sport, dan yang lainnya SUV.)

6. Tessa has two cats. One of her cats is a Persian, the other cat is a Sphynx.
(Tessa mempunyai dua kucing. Satu dari kucingnya adalah Persia, kucing yang lain Sphynx.)

C. Review of explanation about usage another and the other

1. Use of another

a. Example 1: This
door is broken. Use another door.

Explanation: Use any other door, many door choices. Of course what we need is only one door to enter or exit.

b. Example 2: She was everything for me. It would be difficult for me to

find another like her.

Explanation:
"Another" in the example above is not followed by a noun but of course we understand what is meant is another girl or another girl as a substitute for his lover or wife.

c. Example 3: This cake is delicious. Can I have another slice please?

Explanation: The sentence above is often used as a request to request additional or request again. Examples above are many pieces of cake and the person asks for another piece.

2. Use of the other (without 's')

a. Example 1: This
door is broken. Use the other door.

Explanation: There are only two sentences above the door. So if one is damaged then there is
only another door left.

b. Example 2: She has two cats. One is under the table. Where is the other?

Explanation: The word 'the other' above is pronoun. We understand the meaning is "the other paint", the other cat.

c. Example 3: The bank is on the other side of the street.

Explanation: Every street has only two sides, this side and the other side.
